With today’s Supreme Court decision regarding marriage equality, I finally feel like I can come out in the open with something I’ve been doing in secret for years. I no longer have to feel guilty or ashamed. I no longer have to pretend to not to feel the way I do, and I can let it out to the world.
I can now openly LAUGH at the “reasoning” of some of the “gay marriage” opposition (sorry for the quotes on that one, but really, it’s just marriage now, right?).
Our country might be going to hell in a hand basket, but it is NOT because of marriage equality. Letting Moe and Larry down the street, or Sue and Cathy across town, get married has NO effect on my marriage (or yours).
If you want to talk about biblical arguments, let’s not forget all of the other things the bible speaks against. Here are just a few:
Eating pork: “Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.” (Leviticus 11:4)
Getting remarried after divorce: “Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.” (Mark 10:11-12)
(There are MANY more… just google “other things the Bible is against“)
The reason I kept my laughter to myself before was NOT out of any empathy for these people spouting irrational nonsense, but because it’s dangerous to laugh at those in a position of power. You can’t dismiss the arguments against you when they are still oppressing people – you have to deal with them and fight against them as best you can, no matter how ridiculous they are. Until today, the bigots still had the power – until we changed more minds, they continued win. But now, the momentum has reversed. Now, marriage is for any two consenting adults who love each other and want to make their commitment official and share in the benefits of a legal marriage. Best of luck to those who want to take that away.
If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go read some more troll comments about the abhorrence of this disaster so I can laugh all the way through YC’s nap.
Ok, not really, I have other work to do… but you can bet I’ll be enjoying a good chuckle when I do get a chance to read them!
Hooray for love and equality!!
